What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by extreme shifts in mood, energy, concentration, and activity levels. These shifts alternate between periods of intense highs (mania or a less severe form called hypomania) and lows (depression), significantly impacting daily functioning. These episodes are more than the typical ups and downs of life.
Common symptoms include:
- Manic/Hypomanic Symptoms: Elevated mood, racing thoughts, increased energy, impulsivity, decreased need for sleep.
- Depressive Symptoms: Persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, changes in appetite and sleep, feelings of worthlessness.
Mental Health Considerations
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management. Without treatment, these extreme mood swings can severely disrupt relationships, work, and overall quality of life. Understanding the cyclical nature of the disorder and seeking appropriate support are crucial for stabilizing mood and preventing severe episodes.
