What is Psychosis?
Psychosis is a mental state characterized by a loss of contact with reality. It involves disturbances in thinking and perception, making it difficult for individuals to distinguish between what is real and what is not. Psychosis can be a symptom of various mental health conditions.
Common symptoms include:
- Hallucinations: Experiencing sensory perceptions that are not real (e.g., hearing voices, seeing things).
- Delusions: Holding firmly to false beliefs that are not based in reality.
- Disorganized Thinking and Speech: Difficulty organizing thoughts and expressing them coherently.1
- Unusual Behavior: Actions that may seem strange or inappropriate.
Mental Health Considerations
Experiencing psychosis can be frightening and isolating. Early recognition and intervention are crucial for managing symptoms, preventing complications, and improving long-term outcomes. Psychotic episodes require professional assessment and treatment.
